Bristol International Airport has experienced one of its busiest
weekends.

More than 30,000 passengers were booked to fly on the last weekend
before Christmas - 25% more than this time last year.

Airport spokesman Tony Hallwood said the majority were going on
skiing holidays.

"Many are going to Andorra to ski. Winter sun destinations are also
popular, especially Tenerife," he said

Edinburgh and Dublin were ranked as the top two domestic
destinations.

More than 100 flights from the airport were scheduled on Saturday
and Sunday.

The government recently announced that Bristol International would
be expanding, with a runway extention and new terminal building.

Airport managers also hope to introduce long-haul flights to
destinations such as New York within the next two years.

I guess some airports lump UK and Republic Ireland traffic together for
reporting purposes.

I wonder if the New York service will be another new UK route for
Continental? They seem determined to corner the UK regional market!

Yes looks like it. There are also rumours going about for Cardiff, Newcastle

and Luton. COA certainly see the potential of the regional airports. I guess
we should be thankful that they cannot get in to LHR.

Personally I think they're dreaming if they think they're getting a direct
service to NYC! Not really enough market when BHX (already served by CO/AA)
and LHR/LGW are within distance.

AA don't fly to BHX any more. LHR is nearly 100 miles from Bristol and there
is a large population base in the South West and along the M4 corridor
eastwards and into South Wales. Plenty catchment for a daily 757 I'd say,
especially as these people don't have many decent connecting services. It's
basically drive to LHR and that's it.
