EDI **WIDEBODY** STANDS - FAQ
**Widebody** referring to aircraft in excess of B767 size upwards.
ie;
A330/A340/B777/B747
There are no stands at EDI that can handle aircraft larger than
B767, in terms of wingspan without displacing stands either side.
BAA's literature on available (2006)stands states.
Small = 18
Medium = 10
Large = 3
Jumbo = 0
A breakdown on these size samples..
Small B737-600, Embraer, BAe 146
Medium B757, A319
Large B767
Jumbo B747, B777
Source: Edinburgh Airport Master Plan July 2006
OK, EDI has 3 stands (plus block 33, but we'll leave that for now)
that are capable of handling widebodied aircraft.
This from BAA.. May 2005: (EDI currently has 26 aircraft parking
stands
of various sizes. including two jumbo stands which can accommodate
Boeing
747 aircraft but which are more generally used to accommodate 2
medium-sized aircraft each)
The regulars amongst you will notice 6A and 12 are not used
generally, this is because they
infringe the 2 stands either side of them, namely 5 and 6, or 11 and
14. 16 is a slightly better
option, as the stands on that ramp are less used, except that it is
a remote stand at the moment,
and until BAA build a walkway, moving a full widebodied load of
passengers by bus requires
more bus drivers and cargo handling etc equipment than BAA can
easily dedicate to the task.
Also 6 is generally used by the regular Midland Heathrow flight,
and 14 is the Irish EasyJet
and FlyBe flights, so they're stands the airport can not do without
for a long period.
The problem with having a regular flight is that it will seriously
reduce the available stands on
the main apron at EDI for the duration it's here - plus various
other considerations during pushback
etc that require different procedures.
If it's timed when the airport is quiet, great, except it takes
probably near on 3 hours
(at an absolute minimum) to turn one around, and there isn't a 3+
hour quiet time at the airport
anymore. Also, the operators, be it Emirates, EAL, Virgin,
whoever, want to schedule their flights
when they want them, not when the airport says they can have them,
which isn't necessarily ideal
from a stand allocation perspective.
So, that's why it's said EDI has no widebody stands. Not strictly
true, but logistics almost dictate
that it is true.

Not strickly true being the operative words. Plus none of the 3 operators
you mention serve EDI on a regular basis at the moment. If they did want
to
they would most certainly be accomodated.
I doubt it, any regular 'daily' A330 would be hard pushed to find
accommodation at EDI. A dedicated EDI stand would have been provided
by a proactive owner.
|
Really? I won't ask for a source.
BAA can afford to be reactive of course - they
| Quote: | just send the regular A330s to Abbotsinch. Not a penny being lost in
the process.
|
That's incorrect. What A330's are at GLA that would rather be at EDI?
If the need did arise it would be catered for at EDI. If what you are saying
is even slightly true there wouldn't even be a debate about where EK's next
Scottish flight, if there is one, will be form. You are doing EDI nothing
but a disservice.

I ask you, who would lose 2 stands at EDI in order to accomodate ONE
regular aircraft? An owner who can send it elsewhere without losing
income?
|
EDI ops are quite capable of assigning stands. There are experts there who
do it for a living.

Joe, do you have Google Earth at all? If so I would encourage you to have a
look at EDI. You can clearly see the yellow line denoting stand 6A. You can
also clearly see that the thing could accommodate an A380 quite happily and
would have NO effect on the stands either side, not unless the wings are a
very odd shape indeed!
Please let's stop this nonsense, because it simply isn't true.

You must have have worn a hole in your head by this time :-(
Gasp..what's wrong with you people...EDI does not have a terminal
widebody stand it can use on a regular daily basis without depriving
stands on either side of it. CAN WE AT LEAST AGREE ON THAT?
|
Have you asked BAA why they are not providing a dedicated 24/7
widebody stand then? |

Scrub out the adjacent two lines so that a "dedicated Jumbo stand"
can sit
empty most of the year just to please you? Nah, EDI know what they
need
better than anyone that's for sure.
Construct a dedicated stand might be sensible?
EDI needs more stands any dedicated stand would not lie empty, large
aircraft or not.
|
So it will not be a DEDICATED stand then but a multi-role stand that
supports all sizes of aircraft? Even a A380??? |

Please can we have a bit of common sense here, and a little less
propaganda? It's my humble opinion that these 'opinions' do EDI
more harm
than good.
Yes, that's what I thought too.
Wrong..telling it like it is is not propaganda, it's fact. BAA
should
do something about it and construct a suitable dedicated stand and
lounge to accommodate.
So how much would this dedicated stand and lounge be used then? Surely |
a multipurpose stand/lounge would be better business? |

Seems they don't want to be drawn..why?
So what response did you get from them? |
