It would be interesting to see exactly how many *individuals* actually use
EDI (and GLA), is EDI overly reliant on 'suits' travelling back and forth
between London and are their numerous journeys really that necessary? Maybe
time for the Financial Services Industry to rein in this unnecessary travel
to/from London, cut costs etc?

I travel to London on business often, my fellow director even more. We
always use Edinburgh.
Every holiday to the Sun, I have used Glasgow. Edinburgh has been either
too expensive, or no flights.

In this age of broadband and video conferencing I'm sure many business
flights are unnecessary. John Reid opinion please?

Definately Jim. We recently met with a London company via a Microsoft
Desktop sharing site. Had him on speakerphone at the same time, lots
discussed. They will be provideing our company with training next week
using the same technology.

Saying that, it is always good to meet face to face with important clients
and associates every once in a while.

I work at sea, here, there and everywhere. Usually fly from GLA,
sometimes ABZ. Now and again have used EDI down to Humberside.
Usually fly on hols from GLA (PIK on a few occasions ) but used EDI
once to Faro when there were no seats available form GLA.

Aye very good for air miles and hotel loyalty schemes! Just ask John
Dundas a master of modern technology and radio communication but jets
off at the slightest excuse where a phone call or a video conference
would suffice. Then again he has the pleasure of the JC wind-up factor
where a poster is actually using central Scotland airports as opposed to
bagging reggies at them. The bastard!

We spend a lot of money on Credit Cards - just been accepted for a new BMI
card, with Airmile benefits! :)

Can't wait to start taking advantage.

PS - I HATE flying, shake like a fool, very very scared.

I think some look upon it as 'perks', you know, day or two out of the
office, 2 nights in an hotel, all meals and expenses paid for, 1/2 bottle of
wine with the meal, productivity = nil mind you, been cajoled many times
into going on many courses near BHX or MAN but I'm a dinosaur.
Time for the Scottish Fnancial Industry to tighten the reins?

The EDI-disparager you are replying to wants to cut more flights by
cutting out EDI
business travel.

EDI charter flights are more expensive because the demand is higher.

EDI long haul charter flights are non-existent.

Time for the Scottish Executive to cut the excess £500 per head 'grant'?

Hi Jim,

I will reply to this if you don't mind. A lot of our discussions with my
colleagues in Oz, USA, Dubai and UK are now done via the internet, we use
Skype, not moved onto video conferencing yet but that will be soon.
Unfortunately a lot of my flights are necessary but once on site if I
require assistance then I will use Skype to talk to however can help and it
really good as they can send text at the same time (its handy if they are
trying to tell me what to type to copies files etc on a system), they can
also send files to me as well whilst chatting away.

We now have our customers using Skype and its good for support/general
discussions. I am currently involved in updating all of our sites so that we
can provide secure support to our systems via broadband. We hope by doing
this that it will cut down visits to site to upload new configurations etc
(not nice trying to upload a 2Mb file on normal dialup, of for that case
pulling files back to checkout).

By using broadband and setting up conferance calls/support one of our next
projects will not require a software engineer on site until just before the
site goes live as he will now be able to do all the tests/configurations
over broadband. Before this it had meant software engineers visiting the
site more frequently which meant we had to pay out on flights, accommodation
etc etc.

Lucky for me (or unlucky in a way). I still have to visit sites etc. Oh the
joys.

regards John

Jim,

Come on its not as bad as that............ Wink. I do like the flights etc
and the point collecting is somewhat of a hobby, but then again its paid for
16 nights in Holiday Inns for my holiday this summer, also have enough BA
Air Miles for one flight to Hawaii and working my way towards the next one.
I will not even tell you how many points I have left with Priority Club but
I don't think I will be anywhere near the amount that John Reid has.

I am currently dealing with an issue in Miniaplious and its getting to a
point where I do want to jump on a plane and fly over too sort out the
problem as no amount of phone calls or emails seem to be helping.

As for using airports in the Central belt, well I will use the one that
meets my requirements for the job at hand.

Anyway, better go and book my flight down to Birmingham, already booked the
Holiday Inn (should get and upgrade to an Executive room Wink)

regards John
