As posted by ACJ to alt.travel .uk.air.
I flew out of EDI yesterday afternoon, and the security process was a
mess. The queue stretched out in to the shopping area in the terminal,
but only once you got past the boarding pass check point did you see
just how many people were waiting to be processed. At a couple of
stages fights almost broke out as passengers pushed in with the
justification that their flights were departing in just 15 minutes,
which did not go down too well with the passengers they had pushed in
front of, some of those were on the same flights. I heard some of the
security staff comment that it was always like this on a Sunday
afternoon, which made me wonder why that message was not passed on to
passengers via the check-in staff. Having assumed I'd left enough time
for a relaxing drink before boarding, I eventually got to the gate
just as boarding was starting. The crew did announce they were holding
the flight for 15 minutes to wait for passengers stuck in the security
queue.

Reminds me of PIK last year on a RYR DUB flight, checked in well on time but
as soon as the announcement another flight was boarding (STN) then all hell
broke loose, an orderly queue became *very* disorderly, with pax on the same
flight as us (and the STN flight) just more or less forcing themselves to
the front of those who were waiting patiently and with no staff (PIK or RYR)
to keep order, so it's just not BAA,

Security at EDI always seems to be getting critisised. I have personally
only flown out of EDI once. I was due to depart on the first bmi flight of
the morning (8am i think?) and checked in as soon as checkin opened. I
proceeded straight upstairs to find that the security barrier was closed.
Had to wait an hour before they decided to open the barrier and start
letting folk through. By then the queue was starting to build up...
I wonder in the preious case if the security area was fully manned? There
dont seem to be that many flights on a sunday, so surely congestion cant be
as bad as during the week? If they know there is a problem why dont they get
more staff in???

Weekday early mornings seem to be the worst, in my experience. I've queued
right the way back to almost the entrance to the Food Court on one painful
occasion. Isn't the security area being 're-vamped' as part of the terminal
re-development around Gates 6 and 7?

I would imagine they had staffing issues. Something's will always remain the
same.

EDI is by no means the worst airport in this respect. Almost every time
I fly these days (and that is most days!) there is some kind of security
issue in terms of queues or lapses that make you wonder about the value
of security.
First and foremost it seems to me that the staff are clearly not being
paid enough for the job they do, the airports seems to be persistently
short of staff, which IMHO is a reflection of the low pay and poor
conditions. I have had official admissions after complaints about queues
at Edinburgh, Heathrow and Gatwick that the problem is "shortage of
staff". Obviously security is important AND we passengers pay quite a
bit to have the security (no issue with me on this one), and so there
should be loads of staff!
In each of the last four weeks I have been in a queue for more than 10
mins at Glasgow, Edinburgh, Heathrow, Prestwick and Gatwick security. In
the last three months I have waited the longest ever (40 mins) at
Manchester (almost as good as the wait to get into the car park there).
Oddly last week at Gatwick was perversely the fastest I have ever been
through security there! It is simply not predictable enough.
I do not think it is about physical space, as most airports have quite a
lot of space and equipment. It is people to run the equipment and
perform the searches. I feel sorry for the people who do work there as
some passengers, quite unfairly, take it out on the staff. Its the
management they should be tackling.

I think someone posted that the current work at the security area is to
do with the air conditioning....
Agree with all of the above - it can be *very* hit or miss at EDI. They
have reduced the number of scanning machines recently.

Probably - they had mobile air con units in security during the summer
You'd think that they weren't expecting so many folk all to turn up at
once...
It makes me angry when I have queued for 45 mins to see they are only using
2 our of the 6 x-ray machines.
Am going down to London for the weekend - have decided it's probably quicker
to get the train than queue up at EDI and LHR. Works out about the same
price.

My daughter (who lives in Edinburgh) thinks the same. She says there is
little to choose between them in journey time terms, once you take into
account the costs and time of travel to and from the airport at both
ends. Mind you, she tends to arrive at Stanstead and you do have to add
almost an hour for the journey into London from there. Last three times
GNER have been able to give a good fare with a reasonable time. I would
tend to agree if the destination is central London. Not so sure if I was
going to Reading mind you.

Is this not the system Gla want's to copy. All passengers going
through one security point and enlarging airside area. As both
Airport's have almost the same amount of passenger's Gla has at least
3 security point's giving approx a third of passenger's to each pier.
Maybe Edi. growth of passenger's has advanced beyond BAA 's estimate
and they are not providing enough facilities.
But of course that cost's money to increase and maybe BAA consider
they have enough.
