Airports to be renamed after famous Scots

Neil Rafferty

VISITORS to Scotland could soon be flying into the Donald Dewar or Sir
Sean Connery international airports under new plans being considered by
officials.

Expansion plans for Scotland’s main airports are already on the cards
and BAA, formerly the British Airports Authority, has revealed that they
could include name changes. Liverpool became the first British airport
to be named after a star when it adopted the name of John Lennon, one of
the city’s most famous sons. Last week the trend spread when a new
airport for Doncaster and Sheffield was named after Robin Hood.

Now the BAA has signalled it may be willing to name airports north of
the border after famous Scots.
Officials have previously rejected suggestions that Glasgow airport
should be named after
William Wallace. There was also an unsuccessful campaign to name
Prestwick airport after Robert Burns.

“Whether or not we go down that road will depend on whether it would
enhance our already strong city
brands,” said a BAA spokesman. “We will listen to suggestions.”

Naming airports after famous countrymen and women is popular in Europe
and America. Salzburg
named its airport after Mozart, while Rome’s international hub was named
in honour of Leonardo Da Vinci.
America has John F Kennedy International in New York, John Wayne airport
in Orange County, California
and Louis Armstrong airport in New Orleans.

The proposal to rebrand Scotland’s airports has met with an enthusiastic
reception. The Scottish National
party has already produced a list of contenders, including John Muir,
the environmentalist, James Simpson,
the inventor of anaesthetic, Alexander Graham Bell, the Edinburgh-born
inventor of the telephone, and
John Logie Baird, the inventor of the television, who was born in
Helensburgh near Glasgow.

David McLetchie, the Scottish Tory leader, has suggested that Edinburgh
airport should be named after
Adam Smith, the Kirkcaldy-born economist.

Neil Pakey, the commercial director of Peel Airports, which owns the
John Lennon and Robin Hood airports,
said re-branding had been a success.

“The opening of the John Lennon airport with the Queen and Yoko Ono gave
us worldwide publicity.

“The passenger numbers have gone from 1.2m to 3.2m a year. It is not
entirely down to re-branding, but you
do need to raise the awareness and that has worked,” he said.

Charlie Gordon, the leader of Glasgow city council, said renaming
airports could lead to confusion. “When it
comes to promoting city regions, it helps to have the airport named
after the city.”

I do hope not. What the hell has Sean Connery ever done for Scotland? He
doesn't live here and doesn't pay British taxes, so this whole thing about
him being "Scotland's ambassador" is a great big fucking joke.

He is popular "over there" and the only reason to choose his name would
be for marketing spin. If we were really honouring local heros then
I agree, Sir Sean wouldn't be first on my list.

Now I come to think of it, LPL (Liverpool John Lennon) was also named
after someone who didn't live in the area after he was famous.

I can't see many choosing Donald Dewar International either..... unless it
is to cost 10 times the original estimate :-)

Delivered the milk (for a small part of Scotland).

IIRC he's contributed financially to the SNP and declared he wouldn't
return 'home' until Scotland gained independence. Hope he's not holding
his breath on that one.

But much harder to read ;-)

What about Gorrie International? He seems to be a politician who likes
to be abusive to non-Edinburgh folk.
