Kenny MacAskill makes a strong case for a rail connection to
Edinburgh Airport and outlines a way of achieving this, avoiding the
Winchburgh tunnel and the Newburgh viaduct. This would, in fact,
require the construction of only a short link between the existing
lines from the Forth Bridge, north of the airport, and a station at
Turnhouse.

Including an automated connection into the terminal building, the
cost would be of the order of half the £505 million of the present,
officially-projected scheme.

This is highly relevant in view of calls on funds for other major
rail developments, including Waverley and Haymarket stations in
Edinburgh and the Borders line.
