As you know, Clive flew EDI-CWL recently. Here is his report.
Oh, and Clive, could you edit as appropriate please?

- Journey along the M8 was uneventful/unusually fast/awful
- Check-in was speedy/slow
- Had to wait ages/no time at all before boarding
- EDI handled the departure well/badly/abyssmally
- The flight was smooth/turbulent
- And arrived on schedule/was diverted to BRS/LGW/DXB
- The return flight was the same story/opposite/hijacked to Morocco
- On arriving at EDI/GLA/PIK the plane was able to unload...
immediately/after a short delay/after the SAS arrived
- I quickly noted down some reg numbers/took some pix/had a drink...
/bought a copy of the ET/knealt down to worship the hallowed concrete
- I departed by taxi/car/through a suspicious hole in the fence
- and the first thing I did when I got home was to greet my wife...
/unload my camera/post to aaue.

- Journey along the M8 was uneventful/unusually fast/awful

OK Adrian since you gave me a head start.

First of all I was on the ferry when I realised I had forgotten my passport
and booking confirmation. Had to stay on the ferry, go back, get the stuff
and start again. I had plenty of time so apart from the annoyance it didn't
matter.

The following "slog" was unrepresentative as there was an outsized load
straddling both lanes of the entire A8 section. I had a bit of business in
Livingston of all places on the way and still had time to do that. Put the
van in the NCP long stay and got the free bus to the terminal where I met my
brother on time.

Quote:
- Check-in was speedy/slow

Check-in was OK but I was wishing I was in the Scotairways queue next door
as it only had one person. Noted the non-long-haul Thomas Cook Toronto
flight checking in on the other side. I'm sure the pax thought they were
going to Canada but who was I to question them?

Went upstairs for a wishy-washy coffee but was reluctant to pay £1.65 for a
slice of caramel shortcake to go with it.

Quote:
- Had to wait ages/no time at all before boarding

Instead of waiting for boarding at the gate I had a scout around departures.
I was interested to see how it works when international and domestic flights
aren't segregated. Noticed a German Thomas Cook/Condor 757 and an Aeroflight
Airbus amongst the usual domestic craft.

Boarding at gate 5 was a bit annoying as it was raining heavily. There is a
temporary (?) partially covered walkway and the queue rushed for shelter
between covered parts with everyone trying to squeeze under cover. Some
people showing consideration for others and others barging through. Being
Glaswegian I got soaked.

Quote:
- EDI handled the departure well/badly/abyssmally

Departure was on time and interesting as I had never left from runway 06
before. Climbed out over the Fourth and turned right with the landmass round
Leith. Spotted the Castle and Murryfield Stadium.

Quote:
- The flight was smooth/turbulent

The flight was smooth above cloud level and only took 55 minutes. I opted
for Pringles and a beer to pass the time. We routed across country to
Blackpool and straight down mid-Wales. Turning over the Bristol Channel on
approach afforded great views of Cardiff, the Bay area and impressive
Millenium Stadium.

Cardiff airport was quiet. Noticed 2 BA 747's at the maintenance facility
and a Britannia 767 loading for the sun but not much else.

Quote:
- And arrived on schedule/was diverted to BRS/LGW/DXB

Arrived on schedule with only hand luggage so straight into my other
brothers car and we set off on the "slog" into the city. (some of us think
we have it bad!)

The following 2 days were great but I must be getting to old for all those
5am drinking shifts.

The return journey was simple enough but the hangover made everything drag
on. I dozed all the way but was quite impressed as we approached I could see
Arran out one side and the East Coast out the other. Came in over Livingston
and landed on 06.

On arrival at EDI I got the wrong car park bus as I was still struggling.
The American couple in front were heading to Avis to pick up their rental
car. I was going to tell them that's not the done thing with North American
visitors (as we have been told here) but they seemed quite happy with their
arrangements and I left them to it.

On touring around the car parks I noticed an LTU Airbus arriving and figured
that was 3 German flight arrivals I didn't know about. Got back to the coach
terminus and had to wait another15 minutes for the correct bus.

The flights were full both ways and the bmibaby magazine had a big feature
on Edinburgh as a stag/hen and city break destination.

I didn't use PIK as the timings would have made a simple journey from Dunoon
to Cardiff into an epic trying to make it to/from the ferry/flights within
their timetable restraints. My brother lives in Edinburgh anyway and it was
much better to meet him at EDI and fly together instead of shooting myself
in the foot with an irrational fear of using a particular Scottish airport.

Yes, very well done and with a bit of wit as well, I particularly liked the
bit about getting soaked ;-)

Thanks Clive. Very compelling reading with some LOLs. Can't
believe you forgot your passport. Perhaps Welsh passport control
would have let you in anyway.

It's not like me at all to forget my vital acceptable photographic ID and
funnily enough there was a woman at Cardiff without any proper ID who was
refused at check-in. Shame I know but rules are rules. The Aviance staff
were not very sympathetic and told her to come back on Monday if she wanted
to see anyone from the airline.

I know. It only adds to the confusion but I take the passport as a matter of
course (usually!)

Yes, that's why I don't understand why, for domestic travel with certain
airlines, there exists a policy of no photo ID, no travel. As far as I know,
there is no legal compulsion for airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet, bmibaby
to demand proof of ID - so why do they do it?
