Interesting development, perhaps in readiness for some new airlines
arriving imminently at EDI? :-)

I would prefer if BAA insisted on the existing airlines making better
use of the resources to them. For instance, 1.5 lines to check in an
entire KLM flight, or 2 lines for a charter is unacceptable.

As Sunflyer noted, the future is in remote check-in anyway, with EDI's 3
biggest airlines (BA, bmi and Easyjet) offering this facility, with more
to follow.

I'm not so hot on the on-line check in, particularly as it appears
easyJet penalise you by placing you in Group D for boarding. However, I
am a believer in self-service check in, and look forward to EZY
expanding this facility to airports such as EDI. If more airlines do
this, then perhaps a 'massive' expansion of the check-in hall would be
rendered unnecessary in favour of a re-distribution of capacity within
the existing hall .... or at least perhaps a more modest-scale
expansion.

Hi Bill

I agree that self-service check-ins are the way to go. I don't know
about you but I have used BMI, BA and Aer Lingus
and never really had many problems with them. Its good that you can
actually change your seat and see what others
are free on the aircraft.

I have also started using BAs on-line check-in service as well which
is not to bad but does have its own little
hiccups now and again.

The only issue is the so called "Fastbag" drops. I queued up to hand
over my bags after self-service check-in only
to have people in the same line ahead of me trying to check-in. Not
too smart at times.

Apart from that its certainly the way to go.

regards

I agree that the Easyjet manifestation doesn't look too hot - but in
contrast, BA's is excellent. More and more of EDI's airlines are
introducing the technology, and IMO it is to be welcomed.

Some airlines (FlyBE and Ryanair spring to mind) are already penalising
passengers for checking in, by charging extra for hold luggage).

I like Lufthansa's machines. Not only can they check you in, but they
will also print a luggage tag.

The flaw in many of these systems is having to queue again with hold
baggage, but a combination of better planning, more generous cabin
allowances and higher charges for checked in should see these queues
shortened, at least on short haul.

The only problem I've ever had with BA's is that while using Firefox, it
doesn't allow you to change seat. A quick switch to IE fixes that.

See my reply to Callum - better management of that line is needed.
perhaps the self-tagging feature from the Lufty units will be introduced
here.

Having thought about that though, these units do take up quite a bit of
floor space, so maybe expansion is required after all :)

Can someone explain how this on-line check-in works with pax

Personally I am not sure of the benefit to passengers of online checkin
for low cost carriers. Whilst I am sure it helps the airline it seems
that there is even less service. Now why don't they introduce seat
allocation, which can't cost anything given the pax are doing it
themselves. That *would* be a huge improvement. The current arrangements
are yet another reason to avoid the lo-cos.

The BA BMI and other manifestations work really well. Just counted my
boarding "cards" and of the last 100 flights I have taken 75 were with
boarding cards I printed myself. I had only one problem which resulted
in an old fashioned card from the airport, and the other flights were
with airlines not offering the facility as yet.

I really like the Finnair version where you don't even print anything,
but wave your card at a reader to get into the gate! They only do this
on domestics sadly.

The primary benefit to passengers is the removal of queuing for checkin.
Queues for Easyjet at their bases have become very long at busy times.
I've waited 30 minutes to check in at Gatwick with them for instance
(however, EDI and STN have been OK the last few times, in fairness).

Agreed (seat allocation). Any low coster that allocates seats is OK with
me, and given a choice would be preferred on a route.

I must say though, that when travelling on my own on short haul (90% of
my flights), I'm not that bothered to be last onto the plane. There's
usually a choice of seats and room for my bag/coat.

When travelling en famille we get priority boarding anyway...

AFAIR I've only had one problem with a BA BP - the reader at SOU
couldn't read it, and I had to get a replacement printed on stock.

The only other problem I've had was when a LH machine in Munich ate my
old style bmi card (the partly transparent one).

coincidentally, I had another problem with the self printed BP this
week, this time at EDI. The reader couldn't process my BP so I had to go
back down to checkin. I didn't bother printing one for the return.
