IF a transport infrastructure was being devised for Edinburgh today,
the planners would not have left out a direct rail link to the
airport. They would also have ensured that Scotland's busiest
airport had a rail network that connected it to all parts of the
country.
Edinburgh is an important city, not just in Scotland, but around the
world. It may account for only two per cent of Scotland's land area
but it is home to 15 per cent of its population, provides 18 per
cent of Scotland's employment and around 20 per cent of its GDP.
After London, Edinburgh is the second most visited city in the UK
and the second largest financial services centre.
