I am going to get a PPL training course on DVD as an Xmas present and would
like to get some feedback from the folks here as to which one they used and
if they would recommend it. One thing I am keen to avoid is the "humourous"
presentation style.

Thanks.

I watched sporty's free "First few hours" dvd, and i really liked it. No
corny humor, and easy to understand. You may want to go to their website and
request a catalog, they will send you the free dvd along with it(and a cool
poster too)

I guess you may want to go the route of Sporty's. Personally, they put me
to sleep (literally). I'm partial to King Schools and actually find their
mid-western manner and corny humor rather endearing. Most importantly, I
remember what they teach. BR on the weather report will always be 'baby
rain' in my memory <grin>.

Hi Steve

Which is most important to you?
Least humour = Sporty.s
Most Retention = King
They are both good - as mass market DVD's go!

Actually, after reading Cecil's post I went to the Kings website and
watched some video clips - I found the humour OK and I liked their
presentation style. Before I posted my question it was Sportys, now I'm not
so sure.

Thanks everyone.

I have the ASA Test Preperation Guide on DVD, it's excellent..the
presentation style is very straightforward, and includes a number of
practice FAA Questions.

Yea, I would have mentioned that, but I forgot, because I already had one of
those with the ASA starter kit that I bought from my FBO.
So, now I have 2 of them :-)

Because that the FAA no longer publishes "the entire bank of questions",
Gleim and similar books no longer have all of the current "bank".

I've heard people complain about the King tapes having too much corny humor.
In reality, there are only 9 or 10 places through the entire set that I
would classify as actual attempts at humor....and most of them are funny and
unexpected. It's not as if they are trying to teach ground school through a
comedy routine, they just insert fairly humorous thoughts and comments into
the drudge of information that they are spitting out. I've used both sets
of tapes in the past (Sporty's were circa 1995, sooo, I don't know about the
new ones), but for the written, I used the King tapes exclusively and scored
a 98 (with a little side studying Wink )

Thanks for your comments. I have decided to go with the King DVDs, and also
the Checkride DVD, thereby qualifying for 4 free CD's (landings,
navigation, xcountry etc). Roll on Xmas!!

I am glad some Americans think the King stuff is a bit cheesy and it not

just a British thing.
Good content or not, its difficult to concentrate when you are wiping the
tears from your eyes.
Sorry Mr and Mrs King, the only thing funnier would be Basil Fawlty (John
Cleese) doing the stuff.

As I said before,,, the Sporty's stuff puts me to sleep - when I was working
on my Instrument rating I couldn't sell the Sportys Instrument course on
Ebay, soon enough... King works and if you've ever met them in-person they
are very nice and genuine people - I've even visited their staff at King
Schools when I flew down with my wife for one of her business trips to San
Diego - and the staff of King schools (at least the persons I met) were all
very personable and helpful.
