I don't know what Peter Falk had to do with the debate (although I do know that he wears a pretty ratty jacket in "Columbo"), but since there were so many rules; http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/09/21/debate.highlights/ ; would they not have made sure that Bush, and also Kerry, did not have a 'prop', or 'life line'? Ike was not dumb but I'm too young to remember his press coverage. I do remember Nixon's, he was accused of a lot of things but not stupidity. Other factors seem at least as important. Bush the elder was not very bright but made a number of good calls, some under serious pressure. His son is brighter, but hasn't done as well. [1] note that I said "does not correlate well" not "correlates negatively."
