Best time to go weatherwise is between beginning of November and end of
March.
Major buiding works taking place around the Hilton hotel, Oasis Beach, Ritz
Carlton hotel which are about 10 miles out of Dubai city centre.
Recommended hotels and distance from city centre as follows

Burj Al Arab, Mina A Salaam, Jumeirah Beach (7 miles)
Al Bustan Rotana hotel (2 miles)
Dubai Marine Beach Hotel (4 miles)

Taxis are cheap, about £10 for a 12 mile journey, buses are even cheaper,
20p will get you anywhere around Dubai )note separate male and female
seating areas on buses).

Alcohol served at all hotels, there are a few outdoor pubs but not many -
Irish Village is busiest and serves good food (500 yds from Al Bustan
hotel) - expensive, about £4 a pint, £5 for a short + mixer. Food prices
similar to UK. Usual supermarkets, pharmacies etc.
Hotel staff usually very firendly and helpful. English widely spoken.

Are the taxis metered now? We were there about 11 years ago and the driver

from the airport said "Just pay me what you like Sir" When we went camel
racing one of the Army Officers at the track told us to make the taxi driver
wait for us as we would not be able to get a taxi from there to get back to
the town and not to pay him waiting time.
At prayer time on the Friday night the staff in an Iranian restaurant we
were in disappeared for the best part of an hour while we were waiting for
our desert.

It was the most secure place that I have ever been to. The Sheiks who
casually walk around Ascot and Epsom were there in force with their families
in the centre portion of the stand with machine gun toting guards all around
them.
Outside and inside the track had a heavy military presence. The mainly
Pakistani boys who ride the camels were smiley and friendly and surrounded
us wanting to pose for picture when they saw our cameras. The soldiers
guarding them soon put a stop to that.

I'm not surprised with so many gun-toting guards around. >}Wink)
