I cannot get into DUATS with my last name and student
pilot/3rd-class-med cert #. Anybody else have this problem? It just
doesn't take it- "DUATS has no certificate # on file for the name provided".
(I'm planning my night CC and need winds aloft darn it.)

When I had my student certificate they didn't know who I was either. I
had to contact the DUATS help desk to get signed up initially.

Speaking of DUATS, can anyone explain all the security at that site? Not
only do you need a valid certificate to log in, you can't get a forecast
without a valid N-number, and the session times out after 30 minutes.
Honestly, is there any information at that site that isn't readily available
elsewhere? Why all the super security?

It's not so much security, but the FAA's mania for traceability. If
there is ever an accident investigation, one of the things they will do
is look to see if you got a proper weather briefing. If there's a TFR
violation, they'll do the same to see if you got the NOTAMs warning you
about the area. I assume you know that all phone calls to
1-800-WX-BRIEF (and ATC radio communications) are tape recorded for the
same reason?
As for sessions timing out, that's perfectly reasonable. It's a limited
resouce and if sessions never timed out, eventually the system would be
over-run with old sessions from people who forgot to log out.
The interface is pretty clunky by modern standards, but then again, so
is most of the FAA.
And you're right, there's little or nothing that's available on DUATS
that you couldn't get someplace else. All the weather products can be
found on one or another NWS web site (sometimes in more convenient form)
and even the NOTAMs can be found on line if you know where to look. The
main benefit DUATS provides is to put it all together in one place, and
the tracability so you can prove you got a proper briefing if it's ever
called into question.

Thanks. Well, actually, it's looking like the weather is not going to
cooperate for the CC tomorrow night anyway.

I had to call to get an access code- site gave errors on registration-
but now it works for me too. Thanks! Beats the telnet interface too. :-)

Get the Cirrus software for the dial up and use it. I get weather
breifings, flight planning, and flight plans and never worry about time
out.. It's free.

There are TWO similar sounding, but different websites:
www.duat.com
and
www.duats.com
Anyone know wha the differences, pros, cons are?

DUATS is run by Computer Science Corporation; DUAT by Data Transformation
Corp. They basically provide the same data. CSC DUATS has a somewhat
clunky interface; DTC DUAT is a little slicker and provides some graphics on
the web-based platform (like graphical TFRs and wx). OTOH, I like the CSC
DUATS nav log a bit more (has the morse identifiers for nav aids). DTC DUAT
has a relatively new flight planner that was a big improvement over ther
previous flight log.
They both have windows software you can download (I downloaded Cirrus from
CSC DUATS; haven't messed with it yet) which are a little more
graphic-oriented.
On the access side, I've always had trouble with logging on to CSC DUATS.
They allow you to create an alternate logon ID to the system-generated one
(I think you have to create your own when you register for DTC DUAT), but I
can only get it to work after I have logged in an out in a web session with
my system-generated ID.
My suggestion is to try them both out and then stick with whichever one you
like best.

And if you screw up your login to DUATS, you see a bunch of names displayed
