Do any of the CFIs out there have an estimate of the number or
percentage of student pilots that never finish and drop out of flight
school? How many students actually go on to finish and get their
PP-ASEL or equivalent?
Just curious.

Hey! I didn't drop out, I mearly postponed for about 3 years! But I did get
it.
But seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if it was close to half. Seems a lot
of people start, stop, go some more, stop and eventually get it. I went to
two schools 4 instructors and total time of over a year. I started my IFR
over a year ago and haven't done a lesson for over 4 months for IFR. Just
how it goes with work.

I asked my instructor this shortly before I picked up my ticket, and
said that in the 20+ years that he had been a CFI, he estimated a 80% -
90% dropout rate. He said that many/most achieved solo status and then
just lost the drive. "Wow, I can fly an airplane by myself!" I guess
just knowing that is enough for some people.
I personally felt like my instructor was very motivated to have me
complete the course too! Not a slacker by any stretch of the imagination.
Best,

A few years ago I read that the national average was only about 1/3 of those
who start get their private, and only about 1/5 make it to 100 hours. I can't
vouch for the accuracy of this, but based on my experience as a CFI it sounds
reasonable.

Most of them drop out for one reason or another. The top reasons are school,
job change, family moving, etc. Many of them come back, possibly a year or
more later.

About half of the private students I've seen drop out.
On the other hand, almost all of the recreational students I've had or known
have earned their certificates.
They got their certificates in a little over 30 hours, which is fewer hours
than many of the private drop-outs had when they quit.

One long time instructor where I teach said that only 1/2 the people make it to
solo, and of those only half make it to private (25% of all that started). My numbers
over the last couple years have been much better, though last year I saw a high
number of people who inquired about starting but never actually did. Speculation
among other instructors is that the economy is still not that great here in Silicon Valley.
