I havent seen a Cessna 208 Caravan or Grand Caravan for rental
anywhere. Is there such an airplane for rental (with similar cargo
capacity, fuel economy and no type rating) available anywhere,
preferably around Ontario Canada?

I'd just like to see if the wet hour cost is around $200 or more like
$800. It is a turboprop, but the speed is more like a prop aircraft.

I've been looking for a place that will rent me a Piper Meridian (with
instructor is fine). One place has turned up so far, a little under
$800 per hour. I would expect a Caravan to be much higher. [BTW, if
you know of any FBO's with a Meridian on their rental/charter line,
please let me know.]

Youre right. The cessna 208 has 675 SHP in the engine while the
meridian has 500. Cessna can lift 8800 lbs while piper can lift 5100. I
dont know about mean time between engine overhauls, but I'd say the
difference should be 20% to 50% higher for the cessna. Or more if brand
name matters.

However these are fast aircraft. Thinking along the lines of cessna
206, which other aircraft can carry 10 passengers with its rental being
$600 or less? Do people rent out DC-3s? :)

Heres an African operator with the caravan being $1000 per hour:

Which shows it doesnt get any cheaper than this.

I'm not one of those who look skyward for black helicopters, or a conspiracy
theorist, but why would one post this question only to a 'student' newsgroup?
Are there other ways to get checked out in the type without renting one? I
know that around here, Fed-Ex uses 206 type for parcel shuttling to/from a
larger distribution center and to surrounding communities. How do their pilots
get checked out? Perhaps hired for their commercial ticket first then checked
in type?

Just curious

How much did they charge for the DC-3? The gas alone should be 340 per
hour. The vintage factor should add too.

And what is SIU?

Heh wait till you hear what nationality I am. The feds will be knocking
on my door.

Hmm. If they check your passport for flight lessons, I'll have no
chance. :(
