Ironically, I have seen this one printed in a couple of books about
"Bad Poetry" as far as styling, but even when put there on styling,
the people who compiled the books have not diminished the impact it
has. In my opinion it is one of the best. I have also seen it, by the
way, in a number of anthologies of the best American poetry, and it
belongs in them.

The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner
| Quote: | From my mother's sleep I fell into the State,
And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze. |
Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life,
I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters.
When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.

For Johnny
Do not despair
For Johnny-head-in-air;
He sleeps as sound
As Johnny underground.
Fetch out no shroud
For Johnny-in-the-cloud;
And keep your tears
For him in after years.
Better by far
For Johnny-the-bright-star,
To keep your head,
And see his children fed.
