According to:

http://blog.wired.com/defense/2007/04/war_is_dead_ope.html

"In his recent tome The Utility of Force, British Army general Rupert
Smith proposes that traditional notions of war -- uniformed armies
squaring off in bloody but brief contests over land -- are mostly
extinct."

Considering that most wars now are urban warfare against militias an
guerilla forces instead of uniformed armies, I would it say it is more
common.

The Book "Brave New War" discusses "open source guerrillas" and how
they may be stopped. See:

The article at:

includes the following:

"My best guess is that a strong and legitimate government of a unified
Iraq will emerge more quickly if the United States withdraws. This is
because the international journalists will mostly leave if the United
States leaves, so the combatants will be free to use brutal methods
that will more quickly and decisively exhaust the losers' will to
fight."

I disagree;Iran would interfere even more in the chaos that would erupt.
The result would be a fragmented "Iraq"(Sunni,Shia,Kurd),and a secure place
for terrorists to work, with oil revenue available to the terrorists.

and:

"Tigerhawk is not the first person to suggest that the success of a
counterinsurgency campaign varies inversely with the presence of the
mass media. Max Boot once suggested that small American interventions
succeeded because they did not drag in the press, "

Does that sound about right?

IMO,the damage the Mainstream Media is doing is in the CONUS,not on the
battlefield. The troops are being demoralized by the DemocRATs surrender
desire,as shown by all the lame legislative attempts to force a withdrawal.
