Air passenger rise slows

Scotsman Online, 10/05/07

PASSENGER growth at Scotland's two largest airports has slowed to near its
lowest level for 15 years, new figures show.

The slowdown at Edinburgh and Glasgow is largely because more UK travellers are
switching to rail, along with increases in air passenger duty and additional
security putting off passengers.

Reading this it does make you wonder where the predicted boom in air
travel is going to come from. Both airports are significantly
increasing capacity - but this article does not make good reading.

There is no way the upper figures from BAA re growth at their Scottish airports
can possibly be achieved. 2nd runways, GARL and EARL are all based on these
figures which suggest some people might be a tad premature in pushing ahead
such plans.

Hard to understand a reason for the drop, don't see the railways being
responsible as suggested in the article. My guess would be that the
previous year was a boom in terms of air travel and therefore will
reflect badly on this years figures and maybe the good weather we had
in April kept people at home and there is always the increases we had
in interest rates which probably hit some people hard.

As for the projected pax figures - well, somebody getting paid good
money for plucking figures out of the sky I suspect. At least it wasn't
only GLA that had a drop which is always something I suppose.

Whatever the reason the BAA max projection figures are simply unattainable.

Not really a very positive attitude?
