It is damn slow. Also off the bottom of all of the charts, but then I guess
their performance engineers would have generated data specifically for the
operation. Extrapolating the -400 data comes up with around 119 Vref, so
it's not an unrealistic number.

5000 feet up, the TAS would have been increased appreciably too.

From the webpage:

"...50 feet wide runway!) The 747-100 outer-to-outer main gear tire width is
41.33 ft."

Was this much different to VH-EBQ retiring to Longreach?

Longreach's 04/22 runway is 30m wide (and 1587m long).

My brother lives at Mt Isa and was at Longreach when they brought the
747 in - he's not really an aircraft nut but he said the landing was
quite spectacular.

Unless otherwise stated all references to location refer to Western Australia

If you go to the QANTAS Outback Founder Museum, they have a video of
the landing. Let's just say the boss didn't waste anytime at all in
getting the speed brakes deployed and thrust reversers engaged..

It is part of 'slide' show in the auditorium, although you may have to

ask to see it.
