AFRICAN drug barons are flooding Scots airports with huge shipments of
cocaine.
Customs chiefs believe crime lords in Nigeria are trying their luck at
regional airports in Britain because they reckon that the security checks
will be easy to avoid.
But Customs teams at Glasgow Airport have made three seizures of cocaine
with a total street value of more than £1 million in as many months.
Officers have arrested four people who arrived in Scotland after setting off
from Lagos, Nigeria.
A Customs source said: ``There has been hardly any attempt at concealment.
``It's literally three kilos of cocaine, flung into a suitcase.
``They are almost like kamikaze shipments.
``We think it's happening because the drug traffickers think putting their
cocainethrough regional airports will be easier.''
Last week, two Nigerian women were caught with four kilos of cocaine in
their suitcases at Glasgow Airport.
Nigerian drug courier Chukwu Ogbonnaya, 33, was last month jailed for six
years in Edinburgh.
The Customs officer added: ``The Africans are the up-and-coming crime group.
``They are getting into drugs now in a big way.''
