Ultralight plane crash kills Laurel County man
By Jennifer Hewlett
HERALD-LEADER STAFF WRITER
A Laurel County man was killed and another man was seriously hurt when
the ultralight aircraft they were in crashed on approach to Chesnut
Knolls Aviation Foundation Airpark near London.
Norman Labhart Jr., 48, of East Bernstadt was pronounced dead at 1:28
p.m. at Marymount Hospital in London, Laurel County Deputy Coroner Chris
Vanover said.
Christopher Davis, whose age and address were unavailable, was flown to
University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, where he was in critical
condition last night, a hospital spokeswoman said. Davis is from the
East Coast, said Brian Reams, director of the Division of Public Safety
and Emergency Management in Laurel County.
The plane, a single-engine two-seater, crashed at 12:40 p.m., Reams
said. The plane had taken off from the park, 7 miles west of London, and
was coming back, he said.
Reams said he was not aware of any distress calls.
Last night, Laurel County officials were waiting for federal officials
to arrive at the scene to investigate.
Labhart, an experienced pilot and longtime aircraft enthusiast, was
affiliated with New Kolb Aircraft in London. He took people interested
in buying the company's planes on test flights, said his sister-in-law,
Donna Le Van of East Bernstadt.
Labhart had a Cessna at the London-Corbin Airport. He also was building
a plane in his garage. He had won national awards in model helicopter
competition, Le Van said.
"If it was in the air, he had interest. Rockets, you name it, it was his
passion," she said.
"He was a naturally gifted, seasoned pilot," she said.
Labhart was the manager of the satellite communications department at
Affiliated Computer Systems in London, a job in which he was in charge
of setting up broadband satellite dishes around the world, his
sister-in-law said.
Labhart is survived by his wife, Dana Labhart; a son, Karl Labhart of
East Bernstadt; a daughter, Katheryn Labhart of East Bernstadt; his
parents, Norman Labhart Sr. and Lela Labhart of Crestwood; a sister; and
a brother.
Funeral arrangements were pending.
