AER Lingus has provided another encouraging sign of its gradual
recovery from near-bankruptcy in 2001, after signing a contract to
buy seven Airbus A320s and agreeing to lease a further ten from the
International Lease Finance Corp. All 17 aircraft will be delivered
by the end of 2005.
Willie Walsh, Aer Lingus chief executive, said: "On the basis of
this decision, we will open 15 new European routes over the next two
years." Financial terms were not disclosed. In August, the Irish
carrier posted operating profit of £10.1 million in the six months
to end-June against a loss of £8.9m in the same period last year.
