|
|
This happened two cross country solo ago at a non-towered
airport. After full stop landing, I went onto the taxi way parallel
to
the runway, to go back to the approach end to take off again.
On the way, a Cessna came from the right on a taxi
way that intercepts mine. Judging by the speed, it looked like
we would both arrive at the T at the same time.
The other aircraft had no intention of slowing down or stopping.
I thought maybe I was taxing too slowly (I was not, my CFI
told me I tend to taxi too fast) and sped up,
went in front of him. I thought I was on the "main" taxi way,
and he was on a "branch" taxiway.
There was no radio communication from the other aircraft. Thinking
back, maybe we used a different frequency. The airport changed
the CTAF frequency not long ago..
Since the other aircraft was on the right, should I have yielded
to him ? When driving a car through an intersection without
signals, the car from the side streets yield to traffic
on the main street. But is yielding-to-the-right the only rule to
follow while taxing an airplane ? |

FAA has no legal authority regulating aircraft movement on the surface
at the non-movement area of the airport (which includes all surface
area at a non-towered airport). The legal authority of regulating such
traffic lies in state law, if any state wishes to spend time worrying
about airport traffic jam. The FAR aircraft right of way rules applies
only to aircraft in flight.
That being said, the right thing to do is to stop and yield.

Saddest thing I've seen in years was Mr. Heston during a
political rally, suffering from the effects of Alzheimer's
and physically crippled. He is a man and will be missed.

Slow down. Stop. Talk to the guy. Offer to let him go first. Maybe
he'll respond by offering to let you go first instead. Courteous,
friendly, polite communication. It's really not that hard, and letting
the other guy go first won't cost you more than a few seconds. A
misunderstanding that leads to bumping into each other on the taxiway
will cost significantly more than that.
